CMS issued new regulations in three phases. Phase 1 was Nov. of 2016 with regulations which for the most part, were already in place. Phase 2 came and went Nov. of 2017. Phase 3 was to be Nov. of 2019 but was extended with a predicted implementation date the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Although on hold, study the CMS’s Reform of Requirements for LTC Phase 3 before it is required. Originally set for Nov. of 2019, CMS predicts implementation to be the 2nd quarter of 2020. Phase 3 requirements will be highlighted including trauma-informed care and care planning, new staff training and competency requirements, infection preventionist, compliance, and ethics program, and QAPI finally comes into effect officially. Knowing regulations is foundational; homes are held accountable to them. Be knowledgeable about the Phase 3 requirements.
